I was born with a hole in the heart (VSD) and was monitored at Great Ormond Street Hospital until I was 18, then moved to University City Hospital. At 23, I had an exploratory operation, thankfully the hole fully closed on its own.
Like my late father, I have allergies to penicillin and insect stings, frequent nosebleeds and bruising. When he passed during a stent procedure we discovered he had a hereditary platelet disorder (WARD) that caused uncontrollable internal bleeding. I was later diagnosed with the same condition, as was my eldest son.
I wore a medical alert disc from age 11, but keeping it updated became expensive, especially with my children needing them too. By chance, I met someone starting a business selling affordable medical jewellery.
It’s a one time purchase with your name, date of birth and NHS number engraved – no annual fees. These details link to our GP and could save our lives in an emergency by making it easier for others to help you.

I am still active, playing tennis and golf frequently and a regular gym goer. But you can’t always judge a book by its cover.
From the outside I look fit for my age, but I carry a medical card for both steroid and anticoagulation treatment. I want these conditions to be known in an emergency. In the event of an accident or medical emergency, rather than rely on the medics actually searching through my wallet (which in any case I do not carry at all times), I prefer the comfort of wearing the key information on my clearly visible MediWear pendant.
