Why we recommend your NHS number

With your NHS number, ambulance crews in England can look up your Summary Care Record: the medicines you take, your allergies and any bad reactions to medicines. It’s optional, but it means your pendant can say far more than fits on the back.

It’s in the NHS App, on repeat prescriptions and on letters from your GP. Other ways to find it (NHS website, opens in a new tab). In Scotland, choose CHI number; in Northern Ireland, H&C number.

Take it off for swimming, bathing and cleaning with chemicals.
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to bring back the shine.
Store it in its box so the enamel isn’t knocked.
