Buying for someone you love

Many of our pendants are bought by a son, daughter, grandchild or partner. Here’s how to get it right for them.

Talking to them about it

Not everyone likes the idea of a medical ID. Majoon didn’t, until she saw one that looked like jewellery. A few things that help:

  • Choose it together if you can. People wear what they’ve picked.
  • Talk about what it does, not what might happen. It means that whoever helps them will know who they are and what matters most, such as a condition or who to call.
  • Show them the back. The pendant pages let you see their details on it in 3D before you order.

Getting their details right

You can engrave up to four lines, and only one is needed. Ask them what they’d want a stranger to know.

Their name can be however they like to be known. Shorten it if you need to, for example M. PATEL or MARGARET P.

The one thing a paramedic must know first, such as a condition, an allergy or a medicine. If you’re not sure, their GP or pharmacist can help.

Their NHS number is optional, but we recommend it. It’s in the NHS App, on repeat prescription slips and on letters from their GP or hospital. Their surgery can also tell them.

Not ready yet? Choose a blank pendant and have it engraved later, or give us a call and we’ll talk it through.

If they live with dementia

For someone who can become confused or lost, a pendant can help a stranger, the police or a paramedic know who they are and who to call.

  • Consider an ICE line with the number of the person who should be called first.
  • A pendant on a chain is less likely to be taken off and left somewhere than a bracelet. Some people find it more comfortable worn under a top.
  • Involve them as much as you can. Wearing something they like makes it more likely they’ll keep it on.

If you’re ordering for someone who can’t decide for themselves, please make sure you’re acting in their best interests, for example as their attorney or main carer. Call us if you’d like to talk it through.
